Career Options
Doctors Retainer Scheme
The GP retainer scheme exists to allow trained GPs to maintain their
expertise while they are unable to work in a formal capacity. Retained
doctors must intend to return to practice in due course, can work flexibly
up to 4 sessions per week and receive educational and clinical supervision
from their practice.
Flexible Career Scheme
This new scheme was launched to increase the number of flexible
and part time posts within general practice. It is aimed at GPs who:
want to work 49% or less of full time, want to work flexibly or who
want to take time out, but maintain their skills. The scheme is on hold from Oct 2005 because NHS Professionals, who provide the service, can no longer fund it.
Return to General Practice
Career Breaks are becoming increasingly common for general
practitioners, but the prospect of returning to practice can seem daunting,
particularly after a long gap. The “returners” scheme offers
a clear, supported route back to qualified GPs who may not be currently
working in General practice.
