Returning to General Practice - What is the returners’ scheme?

Purpose of the Scheme

A returners' scheme provides GPs who have chosen to return to practice with a specially tailored programme of training and supervision.

Update on Funding

Central funding for the GP returners' scheme in England was drastically cut in September 2005, and no new funding was provided in 2006. This has meant that many Deaneries, including the East of England Deanery, have been unable to provide funding support for GP returners'. However, we do recognise and value the contribution that doctors wishing to return to general practice make.

Who is eligible?

The aim is to attract back qualified GPs who may not be currently working in general practice i.e.

  • Qualified GPs who are not working at all

  • Qualified GPs who are working but not within general practice

  • GPs who have been away from work as a result of ill health
