A national system of appraisal for GPs was introduced on 1 April 2002. All principals should have been appraised by 1 Sep 2003 and non-principals by 1 Sep 2004. GP Appraisal is the responsibility of the PCT with whom the doctor is listed and will be conducted by trained appraisers employed by the PCT. The Deanery currently has a limited role in GP appraisal but is developing a GP Appraisal Support Service and is talking with the PCTs and WDCs about its future roles which include:

We have a Consensus Statement of good practice which we believe all involved should aspire to (see downloads below). However, each of the three WDC areas provide support and training by different means for historical and technical reasons so the Deanery too has three appraisal sections to match:
