As explained at the open day, our primary aim is to equip you with a basic understanding of educational precepts that will enable you to adopt both a principled and reflective approach to the application of the theory to your individual environments. Some people were a little confused about the two reading lists. The list in the handbook is an indicative list which gives a general overview of the topics that are dealt during the year. The students’ list is a collection of books, articles and journals that previous students found useful. Neither is compulsory reading. The very nature of a course such as this means that we leave it to you to discover which texts you will find helpful as individuals. Pre-Course Work: On the first day we will spend time looking at some general principles of teaching and learning. I would ask that you do three pieces of work before the day. These are detailed below. Neither inventory should take much longer than 30 minutes to complete. 1. Kolb’s Learning Styles Inventory: The learning Styles Inventory enables people to identify which parts of the learning circle they prefer and which parts they tend to avoid. It also identifies the individual’s preferred learning style and takes the individual through a structured process to identify how they can learn more effectively.
