Educational Activities

There is a half day release programme operating on Wednesday afternoons, which consist of three 13 week terms per academic year. Every effort is made to invite speakers on both clinical and specifically practice related matters. Many of the hospital consultants are very willing to participate in the training scheme and as GPs themselves, the Course Organisers are aware of the knowledge needed on various aspects of running a modern practice successfully and therefore invite a wide variety of speakers.

Annual residential course held early in the year for the whole VTS at Madingley Hall, Cambridge.

Minor Sugery Course - rolling 3 year programme (2 VTS afternoons per year) designed to cover the basic minor surgical techniques in a workshop environment.

There are established opportunities to be taught in ENT, Rheumatology and Dermatology in Out Patients, and the scheme is well supported by all the hospital departments.

Educational Resources

Active postgraduate centre and excellent medical library at the Lister Hospital. Video Camcorder provided complying with the requirements of the MRCGP and Summative Assessment.

Computer training programme based locally.

Child Health Surveillance and CPR training courses based at the Lister Hospital.

Highlights

We are a small, friendly scheme and believe that learning should be fun. We have a very high proportion of our ex-registrars working in local partnerships.

We support and encourage GP Registrars to take the MRCGP examination (and have one of the best pass and honours rates in the region) but there is no pressure to do so. The final year Registrars run an MRCGP study group of their own before the VTS afternoons.
