Training for Academic General Practice                                                                   downloads

For schemes starting in August each year

Each August we offer four academic training posts for GP registrars - 2 in Cambridge and 2 in Norwich. These are open to any incoming candidate, and will allow them to develop relevant skills in teaching and research while also training for general practice. The VTS will be extended from three years to four.

Why run this scheme?

The Deanery is keen to see general practice build its capacity for high quality teaching and training, and wants to add to the opportunities for GPRs to develop these skills early in their careers. GP now also enjoys a high profile in most medical schools, so our scheme allows you early contact with GP academics and an option to explore research skills, including possible study for a higher degree (Certificate, Diploma or Masters).

Has it been run before?

The scheme started in August 2006. If you are interested we can put you in touch with existing post holders.

What would I do when?

Each post is personalised, to fit in with hospital jobs which tend to be the most ‘fixed' point in the VTS. You would have two mentors throughout, a GP trainer and an academic mentor, who together would work up the details of your scheme. Any taught components would be planned during a post when you could be released for full attendance. The bulk of the academic activity will be in the fourth ‘additional' year, when you would have completed the bulk of your summative assessment / nMRCGP, and would have reduced clinical contact. In this period you would consolidate any teaching and research options you have pursued in the first three years, and would end the post with at least one additional qualification as well as a CV that would equip you to apply for a partnership or a Clinical Fellow / lecturer post.

Where is it based?

These posts are linked with the University of East Anglia in Norwich and the Camdridge University Clinical School in Cambridge.

How do I know I am suitable?

Candidates will need to have a good track record of passing exams, be enthusiastic about good teaching and learning, like to read journals, and be keen to improve the quality of general practice through new knowledge and research. You do not need to have been a class prizewinner, or to be aiming to become a professor. You will need to make a clear commitment, and to be aware that this is for four years. However, there will be an annual review, and this allows the plan and commitment to be reviewed by either party.
